D Day 75 years
On 6th June 2019 we decided to mark the 75th Anniversary of the D Day landings by remembering Mr Arthur Jorden. Mr Jorden had many links with Broadclyst. His uncle, Mr Newman, was the curator of Markers Cottage Broadclyst for a number of years. Mr Jordan was 18 years old on D Day. He was in the RAF and went to Normandy in June 1944. He moved to Canada after the war but returned to Devon often. He came into Clyst Vale many times to talk to students about his life in the RAF. When he died in 2013 we planted a Maple tree in his memory. On 6th June 2019 year 9 students laid flowers (poppies and peace roses picked from the Harry Patch Peace garden) and laid them by his tree. Eleanor Francis recited the “They shall grow not old” poem. Adam Champion, Lauren Askew, Lily Youel and Maddie Youel laid the floral tributes. All of the year 9 students behaved perfectly and showed great respect to the men involved in liberating Europe 75 years ago.
