Congratulations !!

…….to our Year 13 students on their A-level results. The reforms have made many A-levels even tougher this year, so students deserve even more congratulations than usual. The results are also a tribute to the hard work and support of their teachers. A-levels remain the springboard to university, and I’m delighted that (at the time of writing) all but two students have secured a place. Other students will be taking up apprenticeships or employment, but whatever their plans we are immensely proud of them and proud to have been part of their journey”

The following Clyst Vale students have done especially well this year:

• Josh Jones achieved A*AA in Maths, Computer Studies and Physics and will go to Southampton University to study Maths and Computer Science
• Becky Self gained AAA in Biology, Chemistry and Maths, and will study Natural Sciences at the University of East Anglia.
• Joe Durston achieved AABB in Maths, Further Maths, Geography and Physics, and will now study Geography at Bristol University
• Jimmy Blakemore achieved AABC in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Geography, and is considering his options
• Anna Sharkey gained AAB in French, Biology and Maths, and will study Biology at the University of Lille, France
• Sophie Ellis achieved A* in English, B in History, and a starred Distinction in Performing Arts. Sophie is currently with the National Youth Theatre.

Other students had further challenges on top of their exams. Shortly before the exams, Emma House broke bones in her neck in a trampolining accident. Wearing a neck brace, and writing on a specially adapted exam desk, Emma sat all her exams and did exceptionally well to achieve ABC grades which means she will go to Portsmouth to become a paramedic. Teresa Skamletz came to Clyst Vale for a year on an international student programme from Germany; she loved us (and Devon) so much that she stayed a second year, achieved ABC grades at A-level (in her second language), and has won a place at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London to study contemporary dance.

In terms of the overall picture, our results have held up well against the national picture. Our pass rate was 98.2 %, and 41% of grades were at A*-B. All but two subjects had 100% pass rates. Our most successful subjects this year were English, Art, Maths, Politics and Chemistry. Degree subject choices tend to reflect the College’s strengths in Science, Maths and environmental subjects; consistent with our caring ethos, several students will pursue courses in health and education.
